1919

LOCAL 764 EVENTS:
1919: The charter of Theatrical Wardrobe Attendants Union #16770 was signed by AFL-CIO President Samuel Gompers on June 23rd. This date later became TWU Local 764 Day in New York.

CONTRACTS:
Collective bargaining was not law until 1935. Union members had individual contracts.

SHOWS HAPPENING:
– The Velvet Lady (at the New Amsterdam)
– Monte Cristo, Jr. (at the Winter Garden)

WORLD EVENTS:
– Women’s Suffrage passed by congress in the US.
– The Great Influenza global epidemic.
– Massive strikes and work stoppages in many industries throughout the US, calling for better wages, 8 hour workdays, and union recognition.
