Job Description: WARDROBE ASSISTANT – FEMALE CORP

JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Wardrobe Assistant – Female Corp
DEPARTMENT: Production
REPORTS TO: Wardrobe Supervisor
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Open until filled
POSITION SUMMARY:
Oversee the daily operation of FEMALE CORPS DE BALLET wardrobe. This position supports any
technical and administrative needs required to efficiently execute the day-to-day operation of
the wardrobe department as directed by the Wardrobe Supervisor. Interacts and lends support
as needed to other members of the wardrobe staff. This position is part of the touring company
of ABT and will require travel both internationally and domestic along with work at our
warehouse in Secaucus, NJ. Union membership is required for this position.

ESSENTIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  •  Assist in assigning and fit of all Female Corp de Ballet costumes.
  • Working with the Wardrobe Supervisor, pull and prep costumes from the warehouse.
  • Re-stock costumes post tour.
  • Review and assess condition of all costumes and report any major issues to Wardrobe Supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Ability to make basic repairs and alterations in a professional manner in a fast-paced environment.
  • Confer with Wardrobe Supervisor regarding any refurbishment, repair, or alterations that need to take place.
  • Prepare all Female Corps de Ballet costumes as required and ensure all pieces are accounted for and in excellent condition.
  • Attend all fittings and shop visits as required. 
  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsals as required to supervise local crew in running of show.
  • Plan and execute any quick changes required for Female Corps de Ballet.
  • Laundry as required.
  • Working with the Wardrobe Supervisor, maintain any stock required to support the Female Corps de Ballet. 
  • Ensure Dancers’ AGMA contract requirements are met.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by Wardrobe Supervisor.

ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • Support department policies and protocols. Look to develop and support guidelines and methodology to support efficient operation of your area of responsibility.
  • Provide leadership and support and develop strong problem solving and conflict
  • resolution processes.
  • Assist in the execution of departmental goals.
  • Assist in the development of department budgeting.
  • Working with the entire wardrobe department, help develop costume bibles on all existing ballets along with new works including, inventories, performance histories, archival photographs, and tracking all revisions.
  • Assist in updating measurement charts.
  • Maintain a database of various supply and vendor sources.
  • Request supplies as needed for each project.
  • Maintain basic stock of all supplies required.
  • Maintain Health and Safety files inclusive of any MSDS paperwork.
  • Assist in overseeing the health and safety of the department and provide appropriate paperwork to the Wardrobe Supervisor in case of injury.
  • Assist in the maintenance of all wardrobe department equipment.
  • Attend department and companywide meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by Wardrobe Supervisor.

INTERNAL CONTACTS:

  • Wardrobe Supervisor, Wig, Makeup, Male Corps de Ballet assistant, Female Principal assistant, Director of Production, Artistic Staff, Production Crew, Warehouse staff.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

  • Vendors, suppliers, local crews, personnel from other ballet companies.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in ballet costuming.
  • Must be adept in the particulars of classical and modern ballet.
  • Must be experienced in all aspects of costume fitting, alteration, restoration, and maintenance.
  • Touring experience a plus.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to assess the size, fit, and condition of costumes.
  • Practical experience in costume construction and alterations.
  • Knowledge of fabrics.
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques for complex costumes.
  • Knowledge of tutu construction and sewing.
  • Knowledge of embellishment techniques.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills, problem solving, and crisis management.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Possess good work ethic with the ability to stay positive and motivate others.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

TOURING:

  • This position requires touring domestically and internationally.
  • Assist in the preparation of all paperwork as required for tour shipments.
  • Supervise local crews while on tour while fulfilling all other duties as listed above.
